Pay secrecy in job adverts means wages can be shaped by patterns of inequality. Recruiters and employers want to decide your pay based on former pay but this is unfair and anticompetitive because each employment context is unique and employers must compete for talent. There are different reasons why someone accepted a position at a lower rate and this should not count against them and keep their wages benchmarked low.
